Alexander S. - 2019年 09月 25日 Scour is another project by Phil Anselmo, who apparently had little Down, a resurgent Superjoint, and a solo group. This time, our friend decided to test his strengths in black metal. This is not Phil's first attempt at blackening, previously there were Viking Crown and Christ Inversion, which, frankly, I don’t really want to remember. Anselmo in Scour was made up of members of the notorious grindcore formations Pig Destroyer and Cattle Decapitation.
What did we get on this debut 13-minute mini-album? 6 short tracks, 1 of which is ambient. They sound like the most ordinary black metal, without any revelations. The sound is not raw, moderately polished. Anselmo uses the growl, occasionally trying to scream. It was no accident that I wrote “trying” - such high notes as in the days of Pantera and the early Superjoint, Phil has not pulled for a long time. However, I have no particular complaints about the vocals, everything sounds pretty organic here (not to say about the new Superjoint).
It makes no sense to single out any tracks other than “Tactics” - they do not differ dramatically from each other. “Tactics” is a minimalist ambient, which, as they say, is neither to the village, nor to the city. Obviously it was added under the influence of black atmospheric groups, but this album does not have any gloomy or enveloping atmosphere. If I really wanted to, it would be more logical to put it as the introduction or conclusion of the album, but not between the songs.
Bottom line: very weak. Despite the good sound, Anselmo and Co. could not offer anything interesting here.
