What is loneliness? The Swedish Dark Tranquity has been aware of this for the third decade in a row, and so they know that they are marveled at their imagination and creative potential. Always preserving its true and unique face, each subsequent release showed ever new emotions and shades of emotions, from pronounced hopelessness to light, solemn sadness; from cold and hard nihilism to devastation. And all this, as has already been noticed, is accompanied by a feeling of loneliness, for the music of Gloomy Tranquility is purely introversive, you can let it in only when you are completely relaxed, with a gaze directed deep into yourself. Most of all, the motives of Fiction (2007) and the previous release of Construct (2013) are traced in Atoma, but you should also not forget about two crucial albums, whose influence is great and unquenchable so far, namely Projector ( 1999) and "Haven" (2000), on which DT surpassed themselves by skillfully managing to introduce gothic into a melodic death, and also creating something completely unique, opening up wide scope for experiments, not being able to stay within the melodic band whose standards (in among other pioneers) and asked in the 1990s. Of course, the album also has a minus - although it is new, everything that was played on it was already played by the musicians themselves. In fact, you can take any segment of any track here, and there is something exactly the same in the DT discography, but still it’s not self-plagiarism, the musicians try as best they can, place and combine musical elements so as not to strike into self-repetition. So, even though the album is glued from already seen pieces, the Swedes haven’t painted a whole picture like this, so my nit-picking is pretty blurry. As they say, everything new is well-forgotten old, but only musicians have not yet grasped all the horizons, however, they are firmly holding on to their past, slowly but surely developing new ideas. It would be unfair to pay attention to individual compositions, because literally everything is fine here, but it would be even more unfair not to single out "Merciless Fate", which, in my opinion, is the quintessence of the entire album, combining detached losses, lyrically tuned muffled riffs, a melancholy metal stream, during which the synthesizer gives out hard rock (!) overflows, like a Hammond organ, and all this splendor flows into an even more melancholic part of the track, equipped with clear vocals, clear reverb sound, and Not only. Of course, the description is rather mean, so it’s better to hear it once (or even more than once) than read it a hundred times. If the album was not understood by you, don’t be angry and do not despair, find a quiet place, disconnect from the world and other things, turn on your imagination and concentrate solely on music, because trying to understand Dark Tranquity in the background is simply impossible.
