2017 release from the heavy metal titans. Emperor Of Sand finds Mastodon returning to a deeply imaginative and complex conceptual storyline that ponders the nature of time. Threading together the myth of a man sentenced to death in a majestically malevolent desert, the band conjures the grains of a musical and lyrical odyssey slipping quickly through a cosmic hourglass. "Emperor of Sand is like the grim reaper," says drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor. "Sand represents time. If you or anyone you know has ever received a terminal diagnosis, the first thought is about time. Invariably, you ask, 'How much time is left?'" "We're reflecting on mortality," adds bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders. "To that end, the album ties into our entire discography. It's 17 years in the making, but it's also a direct reaction to the last two years. We tend to draw inspiration from very real things in our lives." Emperor Of Sand was recorded at The Quarry Recording Studio in Kennesaw, just outside Mastodon's hometown of Atlanta, with producer Brendan O'Brien (Pearl Jam, Neil Young, AC/DC, Rage Against The Machine), who first worked with Mastodon on their seminal 2009 album Crack The Skye., Runningtime: 00:00:00, A&R: Mike Elizondo, Bass, Vocals: Troy Sanders, Booking [North America]: Pinnacle Entertainment, Booking [North America]: Scott Sokol, Booking [Rest Of The World]: John Jackson (18), Booking [Rest Of The World]: K2 (28), Coordinator [Production Coordinator]: Ivy Skoff, Design: Donny Phillips, Design: Kihl Studio, Drums, Vocals, Art Direction: Brann Dailor, Edited By, Mastered By: Billy Bowers, Engineer [Second]: Bryan Dimaio, Engineer [Second]: T.J.
The return to concept is accompanied by the re-enlistment of producer Brendan O'Brien (he helmed Crack the Skye). In an interview, bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders added weight to the expectations for the album: "...17 years in the making…it ties into our entire discography." Unlike their other conceptual endeavors (i.e. Leviathan) Emperor of Sand's narrative is relatively simple.

After treading water a little bit with their previous two albums 'The Hunter' and 'Once More Round The Sun,' Mastodon returned with their old logo and with it a sound closer to their rawer,

"Emperor of sand" is varied and ranges between genres, it has its own valid ideas and well-chosen solutions, but it doesn't want to be overly ambitious, it doesn't try to flaunt its greatness. There are no songs that exceed ten minutes, but "Jaguar god" manages to condense in just six all the changes in tone and tempo. Keyboards come back to enrich even the tails of "Roots remain" with poignant nuances, confirming how Mastodon refine their talent also in the construction of psychedelic and hallucinated atmospheres.
