 | | Description: | â??Gypsy Tenorsâ? is the 7th release with SKIP RECORDS featuring saxophonist Tony Lakatos. Like a guiding line, what they all have in common is the musicianâ??s intention to accompany each current CD with a story. Whereas the interweaving thread that formed his theme in the past had been composers such as Hoagy Carmichael and John Coltrane, or even classics from the Great American Songbook like George Gershwinâ??s â??Porgy & Bessâ?, this time the central focus is shared by his Hungarian Gypsy roots and his mainstay, the tenor sax.
Not to be confused with groups of male vocalists touring the world with their potpourris of arias and evergreens, â??Gypsy Tenorsâ? deals with the live recording of a wildly acclaimed concert at Unterfahrt, a Jazz club in Munich, Germany. Not one but three tenor sax players, all with Gypsy roots, shared the stage that evening. Alongside Tony Lakatos, who heads the Lakatos dynasty of musicians from Budapest together with his brother Roby, a famed violinist, the concert CD lineup features first of all Rick Margitza, who comes from a Slovakian Roma family. Listeners in the know will recall his recordings with McCoy Tyner and Chick Corea, as well as the legendary gigs on tour with none other than Miles Davis. Next in line is Gabor Bolla, a super-talented player from Hungary who hasnâ??t turned 30 yet but already garnered effusive praise from respected dailies, for instance the FAZ in Germany, who describe him as â??an improviser displaying overwhelming sovereignty.â?
The program for this rave-notice concert that doesnâ??t let up from intro to encore ranges from â??Bebop Csardasâ?, one of Tony Lakatosâ??s own compositions, to â??Silver And Goldâ?, a tribute to Horace Silver, and progresses to such rare standards as â??317th 32nd Streetâ? by Lennie Tristano or â??Lamentâ? by J.J. Johnson, all the way to the Margitza piece entitled â??E-Jonesâ?. Kicking off with the opening track, â??Bebop Csardasâ?, the three tenor saxophonists duel with one another until the sparks fly so fast and furious that the audience feels itself reeled back in time to a Jazz club in the 1950s. A memorable evening that the three musicians enjoyed so much that theyâ??d now like to tour regularly as the â??Gypsy Tenorsâ?. What better way to take pleasure in cascades of saxophonic virtuosity while listening to seldom-played classics and sparkling-new originals. - | | | Manufacturer No.: |
