Sleeve notes from back cover:
This edition contains, for the first time on a single set, the complete 1960-61 sessions that marked the earliest collaborations of Charles Lloyd and Chico Hamilton. Presented here in chronological order and, FOR THE FIRST TIME ON CD IN THEIR STEREO VERSIONS, the dates originally appeared on the LPs "The Chico Hamilton Special" (Columbia CL1619/CS8419) and Selections from ?Bye Bye Birdie?/ ?Irma La Douce? (Columbia CL1590/CS8390). The two 1961 tracks, which had never previously appeared on CD, were originally released on the rare compilation LPs Who?s Who in the "Swinging" Sixties (Columbia CS8565) and "Jingle Bell Jazz" (Columbia CS8693).
The music here is particularly interesting in that Charles Lloyd is the only horn heard throughout these recordings, while on most of their other collaborations the cello was replaced by a trombone player. The complete 1962 Hamilton/Lloyd album Drumfusion (Columbia CS8607), featuring Garnett Brown on trombone, plus the only alternative take from that session (originally released on the LP compilation "The Giants of Jazz" (-CS 8770), have been added here as a bonus.
"The Complete 1960-61 Sessions" on CD by Charles Lloyd & Chico Hamilton is a remarkable collection that captures the innovative spirit of early 1960s jazz. This release brings together all recordings from this influential period, showcasing the dynamic interplay between saxophonist Charles Lloyd and legendary drummer Chico Hamilton. The sessions highlight their unique blend of cool jazz, hard bop, and avant-garde influences, offering listeners an immersive journey through some of the most creative years in modern jazz history. Phono, renowned for its high-quality reissues and dedication to preserving classic recordings, ensures pristine sound quality and detailed liner notes with every release. Charles Lloyd has enjoyed a celebrated career as one of jazz?s most adventurous saxophonists, while Chico Hamilton's pioneering drumming style helped shape West Coast jazz; both artists have left an indelible mark on music with numerous acclaimed albums and collaborations. | | | No. of tracks: |
