Description:No Man's land is a collection of some of my compositions written over the past three years. I only began composing seriously in 2014, in my early fifties, and have been astounded and amazed to have had music performed in 13 countries in such a short space of time. Although I have not had any formal training as a composer my collaboration with hundreds of wonderfully talented composers across the world over the past 30 years is probably the best tuition and inspiration that anyone could receive and I am grateful to them all for helping me to develop my own compositional skills so late in my career. Many of my pieces are for the double bass, my own instrument, and written for friends, colleagues and students and, having an inside knowledge of the instrument and its amazing tonal and timbral potential, has allowed me to create music which I hope 'fits the instrument like a glove'. I have been gratified to receive so many positive comments from players and audiences alike and have enjoyed the challenge of writing every new piece. The title is usually the starting point for every new composition and will often dictate the style or the trajectory of a work, and some of my most successful pieces have been composed to an imminent deadline. Where do the ideas come from? This was always a question I would ask other composers and now I know that they can 'arrive' at any time and no matter what you are doing or where you are. Sometimes I 'see' a chord, musical phrase or group of notes when I am walking the dog, driving, or watching television, possibly times when my mind can wander and is not so full of the usual musical matters or clutter which fill our lives on a daily basis. One piano chord presented itself as I was walking downstairs... I find my most creative times are as a deadline approaches. I have a great skill and capacity to prevaricate or find another 'important' job to do, but once work begins and the first notes are committed to paper - I still write on manuscript paper or any paper to hand - then things usuall
