Descripción:This release is the world premiere recording of Brett Dean's new opera based on Shakespeare's best-known tragedy: To be, or not to be. This is Hamlet's dilemma, and the essence of Shakespeare's most famous and arguably greatest work, given new life in operatic form in this original Glyndebourne commission. Thoughts of murder and revenge drive Hamlet when he learns that it was his uncle Claudius who killed his father, the King of Denmark, then seized his father's crown and wife. But Hamlet's vengeance vies with the question: is suicide a morally valid deed in an unbearably painful world? Dean's colorful, energetic, witty and richly lyrical music expertly captures the modernity of Shakespeare's timeless tale, while also exploiting the traditional operatic elements of arias, ensembles and choruses. Matthew Jocelyn's inspired libretto is pure Shakespeare, adhering to the Bard's narrative thread but abridging, reconfiguring and interweaving it into motifs that highlight the main dramatic themes: death, madness, the impossibility of certainty and the complexities of action. 'World Premiere of the Year', 2018 International Opera Awards, London '... one of the unmissable operatic events of the year.' (The Sunday Times 4 Stars) '... a richly imaginative composer at the top of his game.' (The Times 4 Stars) 'Dean's music is many-layered, full of long, clear vocal lines... new opera doesn't often get to sound this good... Hannigan's spectacular high-soprano unhinging is the more shocking following her poise and inwardness' (The Guardian 4 Stars) Clayton triumphs with 'unimpeachable vocal and acting credentials' (The Independent 4 Stars), Runningtime: 00:00:00, Accordion: James Crabb, Baritone Vocals [Claudius]: Rodney Gilfry, Baritone Vocals [Horatio]: Jacques Imbrailo, Baritone Vocals [Marcellus/Player 4]: James Newby, Bass Vocals [Ghost Of Old Hamlet/Gravedigger/Player 1]: John Tomlinson (2), Booklet Editor [Note]: Sarah Crompton, Booklet Editor [Synopsis]: Matthew Jocelyn, Cello [Electronic Sounds]: Benjamin Schwartz, Chorus: Glyndebourne Festival Chorus, Chorus Master: Jeremy Bines, Clarinet [Electronic Sounds]: Francesco Celata, Composed By: Brett Dean, Conductor: Vladimir Jurowski, Countertenor Vocals [Guildenstern]: Christopher Lowrey, Countertenor Vocals [Rosencrantz]: Rupert Enticknap, Design [Packaging]: Paul Mitchell (9), Directed By: Neil Armfield, Executive-Producer: George Bruell, Executive-Producer [BD]: Jeremy Wilkinson (2), Film Director: François Roussillon, Film Editor [Extra Features]: David Fricker, Interviewee [Booklet]: Cori Ellison, Leader [Orchestra]: Vesselin Gellev, Libretto By: Matthew Jocelyn, Lighting [Lighting Design]: Jon Clark (11), Mezzo-soprano Vocals [Gertrude]: Sarah Connolly, Orchestra: London Philharmonic Orchestra, Other [Actor]: Adrien Mastrosimone, Other [Actor]: Anthony Kurt Gabel, Other [Actor]: Ashley Bain, Other [Actor]: Colin Seery, Other [Actor]: Lucy Burns, Other [Actor]: Maddy Brennan, Other [Actor]: Mark Ruddick, Other [Actor]: Ralf Higgins, Other [Actor]: Russel Fine, Other [Actor]: Sirena Tocco, Other [Adapted From]: William Shakespeare, Other [Costume Designer]: Alice Babidge, Other [Dramaturg]: Cori Ellison, Other [Fight Director]: Nicholas Hall (2), Other [Movement Director]: Denny Sayers, Other [Subtitles - Translated By]: Alex-Hwang, Other [Subtitles - Translated By]: David Ylla-Somers, Other [Subtitles - Translated By]: Jürgend Ahrens, Percussion [Electronic Sounds]: Timothy Constable, Photography By: Richard Hubert Smith, Producer [Electronic Sounds]: Bob Scott (8), Producer [Electronic Sounds]: Brett Dean, Producer [Music]: Sébastien Chonion, Set Designer: Ralph Myers, Soprano Vocals [Ophelia]: Barbara Hannigan, Sound Designer: Myles Eastwood, Supervised By [Sound]: Jean Chatauret, Technician [Sound Technician]: Bob Scott (8), Tenor Vocals [Hamlet]: Allan Clayton, Tenor Vocals [Laertes]: David Butt Philip, Tenor Vocals [Player 2]: John Findon, Tenor Vocals [Polonius]: kim begley, Vocals [Player 3]: Anthony Osborne (4), Labelcode BOPU7231BR (OA BD7231 D), Copyright (c) Royal Opera House Enterprises Ltd., Recorded At Glyndebourne Festival Opera House, Produced For Glyndebourne, Produced For François Roussillon Et Associés, Produced For NHK, Produced For medici.tv, Produced For France Télévisions Editions, Produced For BBC, Published By Boosey & Hawkes Publishers Ltd., Designed At WLP Ltd.
