Deluxe 180gm vinyl LP pressing in gatefold jacket. Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section is a 1957 jazz album by saxophonist Art Pepper with Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones, who at the time were the rhythm section for Miles Davis's quintet. The album is considered a milestone in Pepper's career. According to Pepper, the album was recorded under enormous pressure, as he first learned of the recording session the morning he was due in the studio, and he had never met the other musicians, all of whom he greatly admired.
Cover photo: "Art Pepper climbing the hill on Fargo Street, Los Angeles, near his home, 1956. The photo aimed to symbolize his up-hill struggle with drug addiction, as well as his career. According to William Claxton, Art Pepper had just gotten out of jail the day before and was waiting in Echo Park to score heroin but was jumpy because he'd cut his hand on a soup can." Originally released as "Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section" Contemporary Records C-3532. Recorded 19th January 1957. Gatefold. Poly-lined inner sleeve. Runouts are stamped.
