Elemental Music, together with Sony Music Entertainment, is proud to present the first ever reissue on a single CD set of this West Coast folk masterpiece produced by the redoubtable Nick Gravenites, lead singer of Big Brother & the Holding Company as well as The Electric Flag. Weeds marks the Kama Sutra label debut of Brewer & Shipley and features a much deeper sound than the duo's later radio hits. There's a youthful, earnest feeling here, in the wonderfully fresh style heard on early Kama Sutra forays into rock. The songwriting is sensitive, delivered beautifully by the two voices, and the instrumentation often has acoustic elements that echo the love of country that was bubbling in the LA scene of this late '60s Byrds generation. Singer-songwriters Mike Brewer and Tom Shipley were known for their intricate guitar work, vocal harmonies, and socially conscious lyrics, and Weeds is an excellent folk album of fine distinction, featuring a highly respected session group that included guitarist Mike Bloomfield, bassist John Kahn, pedal steel guitarist Red Rhodes, violinist Richard Greene and keyboardists Mark Naftalin and Nicky Hopkins.
