With Being Water Lali Puna refine their distinctive take on pop and electronics. Although singer Valerie Trebeljahr wrote "Being Water" mostly by herself, backed by Christian Heiß and Christoph Brandner, she rejects the idea of authorship. "Who's That Genius" pays tribute to Virginia Woolf and Madonna. The title track turns this Bruce Lee quote upside-down: "Be formless, shapeless, like water". The lyrics for "For Only Love" were written after watching the documentary The War Show (2016).
