 | | Description: | Complete Releases 1958-60 is an album by Ritchie Valens, released in 2019. Complete Releases 1958-60 includes a.o. the following tracks: ??Come On, Let's Go?, ??Donna?, ??Stay Beside Me?, ??Big Baby Blues? and more. The album is a pop 2-CD. - Ritchie Valens was one of leading lights in what became known as the Chicano style of rock - music from the Mexican-American community of the USA, often sung in Spanish and heavily influenced by R&B, and often with a Latin flavour. He is also, of course, well-known for more tragic reasons, namely that he was one of the three rock 'n' roll stars along with Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper who died in the fateful light aeroplane crash in Iowa on February 3rd 1959 - this release marks the 60th anniversary of that fateful day, immortalised in Don McLean's 1971 hit "American Pie" as "The Day The Music Died". Ritchie was still only 17 years old when he died, but in his brief eight-month recording career he had already had three hits, two of which were in the Top 100 at the time of the accident. This collection comprises all his releases through to 1962, including the A and B sides of his singles for the Del-Fi label and all the tracks from his two studio albums "Ritchie Valens" and "Ritchie", which were not otherwise on his singles. It also includes all the tracks from his album "In Concert At Pacoima Jr. High", which has one side that features 'live' recordings from one of his performances, the other side comprising unfinished demos with narrative by Bob Keane, owner of the Del-Fi label. It naturally includes his No. 2 US hit "Donna" along with it's famous hit B side "La Bamba", along with his other hits "Come On, Let's Go", "That's My Little Suzie" and "Little Girl". It's an evocative showcase for a young talent who made a notable impact during his tragically brief career."The Complete Releases 1958-60" on CD brings together the essential studio recordings Ritchie Valens released during his brief but groundbreaking career between 1958 and 1960. This carefully curated collection focuses on the original single and EP releases from the golden era of early rock 'n' roll, capturing the raw energy, emotional intensity, and melodic inventiveness that made Valens one of the defining pioneers of Chicano rock. You can expect core sides and key tracks from his classic output, making this CD a compact overview of his recorded legacy in those formative years. The sound aesthetic reflects the authentic late-1950s studio atmosphere: driving guitars, warm analogue production, and Valens' unmistakable vocal presence at the intersection of rock 'n' roll, rhythm & blues, and Latin influences. Liner notes (where included) typically provide historical context and help situate each track in the chronology of his short but influential career.
At the heart of this release is the sense of discovery and innovation that characterized the birth of rock 'n' roll. The recordings showcase Valens' ability to fuse traditional Latin rhythms and melodies with the electrifying beat and youthful spirit of contemporary American popular music. The CD is ideal for listeners who want to go beyond the most famous hits and explore the broader scope of his output from this critical 1958-60 period, whether you are a collector of rock 'n' roll history, a fan of guitar-driven 1950s sounds, or someone discovering Ritchie Valens for the first time. The collection offers both immediacy and archival value: it is satisfying as a straight-through listen and also serves as a reference point for understanding how early rock diversified stylistically in just a few years.
Ritchie Valens (1941-1959) was a trailblazing American rock 'n' roll singer, guitarist, and songwriter of Mexican heritage, widely recognized as one of the first major Latino stars in mainstream American pop and rock. In an extraordinarily short career, he helped open the door for generations of Latin artists by blending rock 'n' roll with Spanish-language elements and Mexican musical traditions. His most iconic recordings include "La Bamba", a rocked-up adaptation of a traditional Mexican folk song that became a milestone in pop history, and the heartfelt ballad "Donna", both of which established him as a major hitmaker of the late 1950s. Although his life was tragically cut short in the 1959 plane crash often referred to as "The Day the Music Died", his influence has endured, and his work continues to be cited as a crucial foundation for Chicano rock and Latin rock.
The CD is released by Acrobat, a label known for historical reissues, anthologies, and carefully assembled archive collections that focus on important artists and periods in jazz, blues, rock 'n' roll, and popular music.
