 | Description: | Originally released in 1969, the concept for Dusty In Memphis was to take England's reigning female soul queen to the home of the music which had inspired her. Produced by Atlantic's Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin and engineered by Tom Dowd, the record's highlights include "Son Of A Preacher Man," "So Much Love," "Breakfast In Bed," "Just One Smile," "I Don't Want To Hear It Anymore" and "Just A Little Lovin'".
Springfield is backed by a crack band. The musicians - collectively known as the Memphis Cats - include guitarist Reggie Young, bassist Tommy Cogbill, drummer Gene Chrismann, pianist Bobby Wood and Bobby Emmons on organ and electric piano. Songwriting contributions came from, among others, Randy Newman, Carole King, Gerry Goffin, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Dusty Springfield is one of the finest white soul singers of her era, and this is the undisputed proof. - .. MEMPHISRecorded at American Sound Studio in Memphis, Dusty in Memphis, is her greatest LP. Dusty worked with a stellar team of musicians and producers that included Jerry Wexler, Arif Mardin, Tom Dowd, conductor Gene Orloff, backing vocalists The Sweet Inspirations, bassist Tommy Cogbill, and guitarist Reggie Young. Initial reaction and sales were disappointing on release, but the album has since been rediscovered and critically lauded as one of the greatest records of all time. In 2001, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Features songs by the cream of 20th century songwriters - Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil, Goffin/King, Randy Newman & Burt Bacharach/Hal David. Includes Dusty's classic takes on Son of a Preacher Man (a top-10 hit in the UK), Breakfast in Bed, Just One Smile, I Don't Want to Hear About It Anymore, So Much Love and Just a Little Lovin' - in all cases improving on the originals!
