Description: | CĂ©sar Franck described his RĂ©demption as a â??Poème-symphonieâ?ť, a hybrid work in which choral parts and solo arias are interspersed with spoken recitative (often omitted in modern performances as they are in this recording) and including a purely orchestral section, the Morceau Symphonique.
The work, on a text by Ă?douard Blau, describes the state of the world before the coming of Christ, its transformation through the Christian message and subsequent decline when this is forgotten, with Godâ??s message of forgiveness delivered by the Archangel at the conclusion.
The musical language is of an elevated level, by turns serene and ecstatic, sustained by the highly individual and chromatic Franckian harmonies.
This CD presents an excellent live recording from 1976 from the Dutch radio, featuring the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra conducted by Jean Fournet, its principal conductor and one of the greatest champions of French romantic music. - ORCH. PHIL. ROYAL DE LIEGE/HERVE NIGUETCésar Franck's Rédemption (1873) is a pivotal work. It is an "ode-symphony," coming at the crossover point between oratorio, opera and symphonic poem - a vein brilliantly exploited by Franck in Psyché (1888) and Les Béatitudes (1891). Rédemption also marks a further progression: with this vast fresco César Franck became "le pčre Franck", leading father figure in the new French compositional school, the composer of maturity, creator of Le Chasseur maudit (1883), the Variations symphoniques (1885) and Les Éolides (1885). Here we see the organist becoming a virtuoso in handling grand orchestral or vocal forces and taking his place amongst the major composers of the Symbolist period. |
