Description: | A fiber has a diameter including coating of exactly 125µm. The ferrule in the connector has a hole for this diameter. During the manufacturing process, the fiber is pushed into this small hole, glued to the ferrule, and then ground. The larger this hole, the more leeway the fiber has to move. We only use ferrules with a maximum hole of 125.5µm for our assemblies. So our fiber has a maximum margin of 0.5µm. These ferrules are specially selected, since only a few meet these requirements. The ferrules with larger tolerances are, of course, easier to produce in much larger quantities and are therefore cheaper, but with much larger holes. The standard ferrule from most suppliers on the market has tolerances of 128.5µm +/- 1µm. A simple calculation example is sufficient to explain how negative this can have in practice. Singlemode has a core diameter of 9µm. |
