Five young women, all top-flight string play-ers, united in a single voice, radiating tempera-mental sympathies and similarities, deceptive depths, and a caustic sense of humour: this is the challenging vision of Smoking JosÃ©phine, the 100% feminine ensemble dreamt up by violinist GeneviÃ¨ve Laurenceau as a â??space for creativity and explorationâ??, to develop the so-phisticated opulence of the string quintet. The present album is the result of the special alchemy between GeneviÃ¨ve and her team â?? Olivia Hughes (violin), Marie Chilemme (viola), Hermine Horiot (cello) and LaurÃ¨ne Durantel Helstroffer (double bass), all ac-claimed soloists in their own right, in orches-tras and chamber ensembles. This, their very first CD, they have dedicated to Love. The five artists embody this universal, time-less theme with their characteristic warmth of sound, generous lyricism, and dynamic rhyth-mic pulse: their programme unfolds like a voy-age with surprising discoveries en route, pass-ing through many styles and periods and cov-ering the full range, the many faces of this emotion that rules the heart.
