 | Description: | â??Straight Songs Of Sorrowâ?? combines musical trace elements from
early Mark Lanegan albums with the synthesized constructs of later
work. The meditative acoustic guitar fingerpicking â?? provided by
Lamb Of Godâ??s Mark Morton â?? on â??Apples From A Treeâ?? and â??Hanging
On (For DRC)â?? echo 1994â??s â??Whiskey For The Holy Ghostâ??. Yet one of
that recordâ??s touchstones was Van Morrisonâ??s â??Astral Weeksâ??, echoed
in the new albumâ??s opener â??I Wouldnâ??t Want To Sayâ??, where Lanegan
extemporises à la Ballerina over musique concrète wave patterns
generated by his latest favourite compositional tool, a miniature
computer-synth called the Organelle. The lyric clings onto the music,
emulating queasy momentum: â??Swinging from deathâ?¦ to revival.â?ť
â??That song is the explanation, the beginning and middle and end of
that entire period of time,â?ť Mark says. â??The encapsulation of the
entire experience, book and record. So I started with that.â?ť
Lanegan affirms that every song references a specific episode or
person in his autobiography, albeit some more explicitly than others.
â??Hanging On (For DRC)â?? is a loving ode to his friend Dylan Carlson,
genius progenitor of drone metal and a fellow unlikely survivor of
Seattleâ??s narcotic dramas. â??I was always unhappy, and he was the guy
who was always smiling, even through my crazy schemes that
eventually got both of us into a lot of trouble.â?ť
â??Straight Songs Of Sorrowâ?? feels both definitive and unique, a
culmination of its creatorâ??s arc yet also indicative of the energy that
drives him onto future horizons. - © ? 2020 Flooded Soil Recordings under exclusive license to Heavenly Recordings / [PIAS]. Made in the EU.
