While DiDonato is not the first woman to take on the challenge of Winterreise, traditionally the preserve of tenors and baritones, she brings her own dramaturgy to its 24 songs. Setting poems by Wilhelm MÃ¼ller, Winterreise is seen through the eyes of a heartbroken young man making his way through a frozen landscape. â??But what about her?â? asks DiDonato. â??The woman he loved and who, for whatever reason, disappointed him â?¦ What if the young man of Winterreise sent her his last journals before he parted?
