Description: | "On A Cold Winter's Day", the first dhm album by the Quadriga Consort, became a bestseller, and the ensemble's other albums were also widely praised for their special repertoire and successful interpretation: "Some songs move you to tears, others are almost inviting for dancing. (...) Timelessly beautiful. " (WAZ) The Austrian ensemble now has the right music for summer: the new album features songs and instrumentals from Scandinavia and the British Isles on the subject of midsummer. Midsummer night has always had a special meaning for the people of the Far North and is celebrated with long-handed customs and atmospheric festivals. The Quadriga Consort has found, partly rediscovered around 20 traditional songs and melodies from Sweden, Denmark, England, Ireland and Scotland, which refer to these exuberant festivals and the Nordic summer. One of them is "Idas sommarvisa", a song that is extremely popular in Swedish and German schools to this day, the text of which is by Astrid Lindgren. Most of the pieces on the album are arranged by the head of the ensemble and harpsichordist Nikolaus Newerkla for a six-part line-up of recorders, viola da gambe, percussion and harpsichord and of course vocals (Sophie Eder). Many of the selected instrumental dances already have the summer theme in their title, such as the reel "First Month of Summer" or the jigs "Green Meadows" and "The Lark in the Blue Summer Sky". With "Uti vår hage" (In our garden) you can also hear an old Swedish folk song, which became famous worldwide thanks to the choral setting written by Hugo Alfvén in 1923. The text describes the abundance of plants and blooming life. "Vi elsker vort land" (We love our country), the song created by Holger Drachmann in 1885, has long been considered the folk song for the solstice festival in Denmark. With "Midsummer" too, Quadriga Consort succeeds in creating an atmospheric, varied and excitingly orchestrated album, which not only lets the listener dream of long nights in summer. - NIKOLAUS NEWERKLA |
