 | Description: | Camille Saint-Saëns is celebrated for works as diverse as the witty Carnaval des Animaux, the spectacular â??Organ Symphonyâ?? and the splendid opera Samson et Dalila. Now the Camille Saint-Saëns Edition demonstrates the true breadth and depth of his achievement. Released on 34 CDs to honour the composer on the 100th anniversary of his death (which falls on 16th December 2021), it is the most comprehensive collection ever dedicated to his music and his mastery.
Born in Paris in 1835, Saint-Saëns achieved international renown as a composer, pianist and organist. He produced some 600 works in a multiplicity of genres, and towards the end of his career was by far the most-performed living composer. As an advocate and figure of authority he shaped the course of musical life, both in France and beyond its borders.
The Edition, featuring a number of important CD premieres, spans more than a century of recording history â?? from 1904 to 2020. It encompasses a host of great instrumentalists, singers, conductors and orchestras, many of them from France. Saint-Saëns himself can be heard as a performer, both on piano rolls and acoustic recordings. The CD wallets are adorned with paintings by Monet, Degas and Caillebotte and the accompanying booklet includes a substantial essay by Saint-Saëns biographer Marie-Gabrielle Soret, a chief conservator at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. - ..
