Eugene S. - 29/Jan/2025 The second studio album by the American rock band Nirvana, released on September 24, 1991. Nevermind became an unexpected critical and commercial success, reaching the top 10 on charts across the world. I recommend.
| | Yuriy P. - 17/Nov/2024 The second and best album by Nirvana, with which postulate hardly anyone would disagree. Well-deserved "platinum" in just a month of sales. Wildly popular. Classics of the "new Seattle sound", called "grunge" - music that broke all stereotypes, since it combined apathy and aggression, irony and expressive seriousness, lyricism and cynical rudeness, ragged rhythm and accentuated "dirty" guitar sound, heart-rending vocals and strange lyrics written by a person who is not adapted to life in this world (Kurt Cobain's parents divorced when he was 8 years old, which caused feelings of alienation and inferiority, which subsequently affected his work). Almost every song is a hit, with the exception of "Territorial Pissings" (typical hardcore). Everything else - "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (named after a popular deodorant), which has become an anthem for American (and not only) teenagers, "In Bloom" (in general), dedicated to the young blooming generation who understand little about life, the slow "Come As You Are", the percussive and abnormal (however, like all the others) "Breed" ("We can plant a house, we can build a tree"), the slow song with a noisy emotional chorus "Lithium" (the title refers to lithium salt used to treat psychosis: "I'm happy, because today I found friends, they're in my head; I'm a freak, but it's okay, because you are too"), the almost acoustic "Polly" (where sexual relations are described using the image of a female parrot), "Drain You" (the instrumental in the middle, by the way, reminds me of a more rigid version of Pink Floyd's "Interstellar Overdrive"), "Lounge Act", reflecting on jealousy, "Stay Away", the most punk-like screaming "Stay Away", rock-n-roll "On a Plain" ("I love myself more than you", and maybe even "...than you"), viscous and somewhat creepy "Something in the Way" - rush through your head as a single whole, remembered forever (especially the first half). The group presented us with very interesting musical finds that did not leave many indifferent. A separate article is the frank lyrics, in many cases dedicated to relationships between the sexes. For example, "Come As You Are" means not only "Come as / as you are", but also "Finish ..." (it is not for nothing that spermatozoa were one of the images in the video for this song). And how do you like these verses: "I chew meat for you, pass it to you back and forth in a passionate kiss" ("Drain You"). Or here's another one from "Something in the Way": "It's okay to eat fish, 'cause they don't have any feelings" (by "fish" he naturally means women). In general, as we can see, Cobain didn't try to hide his sexual preoccupation, because he wrote songs for himself, not for anyone else. And he was very surprised when what he considered completely uncommercial became so popular that it probably wasn't an easy burden for such a closed person like him. He always said that there were many bands in the world much better than Nirvana, but for some reason no one wanted to know about them. Nevertheless, when they say "grunge", everyone first of all remembers his band.
