Nachdem er in mehreren Band-Formationen musiziert hatte, unter anderem mit den Gosdin Brothers, Doug Dillard und Carla Olson und im Laufe der Jahre mehrere Alben mit Mitgliedern von The Byrds aufgenommen hatte, begann Clark eine Solokarriere, die stark orchestrierte Schätze wie "No Other" und das folkige "White Light" umfasste. Bei all dem und in jeder Umgebung blieben Clarks klarer und wahrer Gesang, seine poetischen Wendungen und seine Fähigkeit, melancholische Melodien zu weben, stets erhalten. Sein Werk ist beeindruckend und hat auch lange nach seinem Tod im Jahr 1991 jede neue Generation von Popkünstlern, die in seinem Kielwasser folgten, beeinflusst.
