There is balm for the soul in this pairing of oboe concertos by Mozart and Strauss, performed by the Spanish oboist Cristina GÃ³mez Godoy. She is partnered by the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, conducted by its co-founder Daniel Barenboim. Mozartâ??s Oboe Concerto, dating from 1777, is a work of sublime elegance and congeniality, while Straussâ??s concerto, written in 1945, joins Metamorphosen and the Vier letzte Lieder in the composerâ??s final trilogy of masterpieces. BBC Radio 3 has praised â??Godoyâ??s expressive lyricismâ? on this recording, describing her as â??a lovely subtle soloist whose joy in Mozartâ??s writing is obvious.â? Admired as a concerto soloist with major orchestras around the world, Cristina GÃ³mez Godoy is also principal oboist of the Staatskapelle Berlin, of which Barenboim is Music Director and Conductor for Life.
