Cinema's is an album by Michel Portal, released in 2022. The album is a jazz CD. For having found himself at the confluence of several spheres of the musical field, Michel Portal is probably one of the musicians who, in Europe, questioned - and above all lived - the aesthetic questions that shaped music in the second half of the 20th century, both in its questioning of traditional categories (soloist, performer, composer) and in its instrumental practices. Exceptional clarinetist, recognized for his interpretations of Brahms and Mozart, he was jointly interested in contemporary music, participating in the creation of numerous pieces (Boulez and Berio appealed to his imaginative virtuosity), and to the improvisation such as the arrival of free jazz in France in the mid-1960s made it possible to consider it from a new perspective. He drew from this exceptional versatility an art of improvisation, contributing to the invention of a European free jazz, which is first of all, for him, a way of considering music falling outside of any style categories of and style and embracing it as a lived entirety in the moment of the performance. - FT.
