Hawkinsâ?? meeting with Ellington and an all-star group taken out of the big band does feature such greats as Ray Nance on cornet and violin, trombonist Lawrence Brown, altoist Johnny Hodges, and baritonist Harry Carney. High points include an exuberant â??The Jeep Is Jumpin',â?? an interesting remake of â??Mood Indigo,â?? and a clutch of newly-composed Ellington pieces.
Verveâ??s Acoustic Sounds Series features transfers from the original analog tapes mastered by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at QPR. The series is supervised by Chad Kassem, CEO of Acoustic Sounds, and releases are presented in deluxe gatefold tip-on packaging. - .. Even though Duke Ellington and Coleman Hawkins had both been well-known jazzmen since the early 1920s, it wasn't until 1962 - at least 20 years after Duke first suggested it - that these two recorded their only session together. High points include an exuberant "The Jeep Is Jumpin'," an interesting remake of "Mood Indigo," and a few new Ellington pieces. Verve Acoustic Sounds Series features transfers from analog tapes.Released in a gatefold sleeve with one opening on the back outer edge. Vinyl comes in a non-branded rice paper inner sleeve. An 11"x11" insert for 'Acoustic Sounds Series' is included.
