FFO: Coffins, Disembowlment, Morbid Angel, Hooded Menace, Hellhammer, Grave, Paradise Lost. - A Tzompantli, in bygone days, was a rack used to display human skulls, often of enemies or sacrifices, in several Mesoamerican civilizations. In 2022, Tzompantli is a beyond-crushing death doom war march built on a bedrock of Native / Indigenous themes, rituals and history, illuminating the splendor, brutality and despair within. Nearly three years after the band's self-released EP, Tzompantli's debut full length presents the first smoke-conjured specter to manifest materially. Tlazcaltiliztli, a ritual ceremony that translates to "nourishing the fire and sun with blood", is imbued with the spirit of Native inspiration that dwells deep within the heart and soul of the project and is skillfully weaved into a traditional bludgeoning framework of spine-severing savagery and melancholic anguish. On the ritualistic "Eltequi" (to cut the chest open and extract the heart as an offering) the band's unification of native / folk instrumentation and heaviness becomes one in the same, opening vast new horizons for where this sound can go.Tlazcaltiliztli is dedicated, and an offering, to the indigenous peoples, nations and tribes of the North, South, East and West of the American continents. It marks a fearsome and spirited new vision for the death metal underground.Black vinyl version, includes a lyric insert. "MADE IN CZ" printed on barcode sticker.Tlazcaltiliztli is the powerful LP from Tzompantli, released by renowned label 20 Buck Spin. This album stands out as a monumental work in death/doom metal, blending crushing heaviness with indigenous Mesoamerican influences both musically and thematically. The tracks are dense and atmospheric, featuring ritualistic percussion, guttural vocals, and evocative melodies that transport listeners into an ancient world of spiritual warfare and ancestral reverence. Tzompantli has quickly risen to prominence within the underground scene for their unique sound and cultural depth; previous releases have garnered critical acclaim for pushing genre boundaries while honoring heritage.
Tzompantli is a collective led by Brian Ortiz (also known from Xibalba), who brings together musicians dedicated to fusing extreme metal with pre-Columbian traditions. Their debut EP was widely praised for its originality, setting the stage for Tlazcaltiliztli?s even more ambitious scope.
20 Buck Spin is a respected independent record label based in Olympia, Washington. Known for championing innovative acts across doom, death metal, black metal, and beyond since 2005, they?ve helped launch or support influential artists like Pallbearer and Tomb Mold.
