Extra-Infos: .. Messengers With Thelonious Monk
Description:On May 14 and 15, 1957, Thelonious Monk sat in with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers to record a one-off album for Atlantic Records; Monkâ??s lone appearance on the label. It was also his only recording with the Jazz Messengers, an ever-evolving collective led by drummer Art Blakey, whoâ??s joined on the album by Johnny Griffin on tenor saxophone, Bill Hardman on trumpet, and bassist Spanky DeBrest. The vinyl version of Art Blakeyâ??s Jazz Messengers With Thelonious Monk comes in a replica of the original sleeve, which features photos from the era, including the cover art taken by Lee Friedlander, an award-winning photographer renowned for the portraits of jazz artists he took for Atlantic Records in the 1950s. Both the CD and LP version of the deluxe edition include a newly remastered version of the 1958 album, plus unreleased outtakes on disc two. An illustrated booklet comes with the collection and features liner notes by music historian, journalist, and producer Ashley Khan. His writing provides historical context about the artists and insightful commentary about their art. - .. MESSENGERS WITH THELONIOUS MONK
Two CDs. In May of 1957, Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers went into the studio with Thelonious Monk to record a one-off album for Atlantic. The Jazz Messengers were a loose collective of young Jazz musicians, with a constantly rotating lineup to keep the music fresh and help launch new careers. In this iteration we find Art Blakey on drums, Thelonious Monk on piano, Johnny Griffin on tenor saxophone, Bill Hardman on trumpet and Spanky DeBrest on bass. -Blakey had recorded with Monk on various occasions, but this was the first time Monk sat in with the Jazz Messengers. This also marks Thelonious Monk's only appearance on Atlantic Records. The result is a true meeting of the minds, a beautiful union of Monk's melodies with Blakey's unshakable sense of swing. This 65thAnniversary deluxe edition includes an extra disc of unreleased outtakes, celebrating the most sensational jazz collaboration of the 1950s.
Recorded 1957. Made in Germany.
