Extra-Infos: .. With Thelonious Monk
Description:On May 14 and 15, 1957, Thelonious Monk sat in with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers to record a one-off album for Atlantic Records; Monkâ??s lone appearance on the label. It was also his only recording with the Jazz Messengers, an ever-evolving collective led by drummer Art Blakey, whoâ??s joined on the album by Johnny Griffin on tenor saxophone, Bill Hardman on trumpet, and bassist Spanky DeBrest. The vinyl version of Art Blakeyâ??s Jazz Messengers With Thelonious Monk comes in a replica of the original sleeve, which features photos from the era, including the cover art taken by Lee Friedlander, an award-winning photographer renowned for the portraits of jazz artists he took for Atlantic Records in the 1950s. Both the CD and LP version of the deluxe edition include a newly remastered version of the 1958 album, plus unreleased outtakes on disc two. An illustrated booklet comes with the collection and features liner notes by music historian, journalist, and producer Ashley Khan. His writing provides historical context about the artists and insightful commentary about their art. - .. WITH THELONIOUS MONK
Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers With Thelonious Monk - Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers with Thelonious Monk is a studio album originally released in 1958 by Atlantic Records. It is a collaboration between the Jazz Messengers, the group led by drummer Art Blakey, and Thelonious Monk on piano. Throughout the preceding decade, on sessions for both Blue Note and Riverside, Blakey had supported Monk on various occasions. Monk returned the favor on this one-off session for Atlantic. Blakey was on the verge of beginning a long-term contract with Blue Note, while Monk was in the middle of his stay on Riverside. One month after these recordings, Monk would begin his summer and autumn residency at the Five Spot on Cooper Square after regaining his cabaret card, without which he had been barred from playing in most of New York City's clubs. Monk's quartet featuring John Coltrane at that residency would bring Monk fame beyond the inner circle of jazz aficionados. Atlantic released this album over a year after it was recorded, thereby capitalizing on Monk's increased visibility.
