Description:

Banji's debuutalbum 'Freshcakes' laat de zoete indie-pop horen die het kwartet het afgelopen jaar heeft gecreÃ«erd. Dit vrolijke geluid verbergt echter de donkere thema's die als het ware worden besproken in de songs. Morris legt uit: "Banji's songwriting heeft altijd mijn omgeving weerspiegeld. De grote thema's van dit album zijn het worstelen met volwassenheid, eigenwaarde en zelfwaardering, mental health, frustraties, verslaving en het vinden van je eigen zelfdiscipline en volwassenheid naar mate je ouder wordt. De teksten die ik schreef tijdens het maken van 'Freshcakes' zijn meestal opgebouwd rond persoonlijke sociale situaties en onderwerpen die ik moeilijk kan ontleden. Stressvolle gevoelens over gemaakte fouten, niet ingeloste verwachtingen en het schuldgevoel dat daarmee gepaard gaat. Op jonge leeftijd heb ik geleerd om muziek te gebruiken als uitlaatklep voor frustratie en stress. Het belangrijkste wat ik met deze plaat wilde bereiken was een plek vinden voor die gevoelens en ze loslaten, een soort therapie, in zekere zin." Naast muzikant is elk lid van de band muziekproducer en hebben zij gezamenlijk hun tanden in het album gezet. Ze werkte eerder onder meer met Jeroen De Pessemier in de ICP Studio's in Brussel waar The Cure en The Vaccines hebben opgenomen, en met Mucky, die heeft gewerkt met Sevdaliza en The Black Eyed Peas. Nu hebben ze de teugels volledig in handen genomen waardoor elk aspect van de plaat een persoonlijk tintje en een duidelijke Banji sound heeft gekregen. 'Freshcakes' is een album dat de band doet onderscheiden van andere indiebands - van het hyperactieve 'Listen' en 'Chatterbox', naar het laid-back 'Dogbreath' & 'Chills' of het openhartige 'TalkieWalkie'. - LIGHT BLUE VINYL
