 | | Description: | For his new opus, Heroides, Wim Mertens was inspired by the Heroides (Epistulae heroidum). It is a collection of poems written by Ovid, in the form of fictitious letters addressed for the most part by heroines of mythology (Sappho, Penelope, Hermione,â?¦) to their absent loved ones (Phaon, Odysseus, Orestes,â?¦) because of wars or other causes of separation. These letters, which remained for the most part unanswered, are what one might call minor tragedies.
With Heroides, the composer has chosen to respond musically to these monologues by presenting the same compositions with two different instrumentations. Like a mirror to answer the pain of absence, like an echo to these laments of humble solitude, like a hymn to get together again. - | | | Playtime: |
