The music of Bach has been an important part of FazÄ±l Sayâ??s life since his childhood. His interpretation of the Goldberg Variations, a pinnacle of the keyboard repertoire, draws on his broader knowledge of Bachâ??s suites, cantatas and oratorios. â??The interpreter must deeply internalise this long piece,â? he says, â??to the degree of presenting it as though it were their own composition ... It is a masterpiece of music and mathematics. I wanted my interpretation to convey the unique song, dance and story of each part of the piece â?¦ Composed 280 years ago for a two-manual harpsichord, the piece presents particular technical difficulties for someone performing it today on a concert piano, since many sections contain phrases where the hands, keys and fingers overlap. â?¦ Every pianist must find their own solutions to these difficulties. â??Rather than evaluating a performance purely in terms of what is â??wrongâ?? or â??rightâ?? from a modern-day perspective, we should seek out the personal touches that reveal the artistâ??s own answers to why we make music and why we listen to it.
