Description: | My first album, ??Cinematic Piano?, opened up new artistic paths for me. Some of them fascinated me from the start even though I cannot name them. As an abstract art, music can ?? and sometimes even should ?? get off the beaten track, regardless of whether it is rooted in classical genres, jazz, or film. ??Sideways? has been an attempt to continue my journey, learn new things and develop. I am happy that I have once again met fantastic companions to accompany me on my way.
Composition has been, already for some time, my major form of expression. This time I decided to write not just for the piano, but for larger instrumental line-ups. I therefore invited two fantastic ensembles, Polish Soloists and Cracow Golden Quintet, to collaborate. I am genuinely glad these artists have agreed to play my music and put so much heart into it. Polish Soloists is a sensational chamber string orchestra, Cracow Golden Quintet ?? a phenomenal wind quintet. These excellent soloists and chamber musicians have thus decided to make music together.
Reluctant as I am to pigeonhole music, I must admit that film has been one of my main sources of inspiration. Hence the film-like character of the pieces on this album, which, however, differ in atmosphere and the choice of musical means. The eponymous ??Sideways? is energetic and edgy at times, ??The Portals? ?? more fabulous in style, whereas ??PasaCatedral? is a kind of guitar concerto with string orchestra, oboe, and piano, in which I attempted to reproduce the impression we often have on entering the most splendid cathedrals and admiring their fine interiors. I am greatly honoured that Łukasz Kuropaczewski, who is a brilliant guitar virtuoso as well as my close friend, agreed to perform the solo part. I could not possibly imagine a more beautiful interpretation.
The recording of my two classical favourites, Johann Sebastian Bach??s Concerto in F Minor BWV 1056 and George Gershwin??s ??Rhapsody in Blue?, has likewise been important to me. Bach is my favourite composer, and I can hardly imagine a large-scale artistic project without his timeless music. As for ??Rhapsody in Blue?, one of the most exciting piano concertos, I have always wanted to play it. Now I had the unique opportunity to perform this piece as arranged by Reinhard Gutschy and myself, with a wind quintet rather than a symphony orchestra. The album ends with an improvisation on Michael Kiwanuka??s song ??Cold Little Heart?, which I know from the TV series ??Big Little Lies?. Working on ??Sideways? has been enormous fun to me. I hope you will also find joy in listening to this music.
