Description:??If I Were A Butterfly? is the fourth studio album from Rayland Baxter, and his first in 4 years. The album examines love and loss, Rayland??s strive for transcendence and existential ruminations on happiness and freedom. The new songs were completed in the wake of his father, the legendary Bucky Baxter??s (Bob Dylan??s longtime pedal steel player and member of Steve Earle??s Dukes) passing in May 2020. His late father appears on the album along with a host of collaborators including Shakey Graves, Sophia Rose, Zac Cockrell of Alabama Shakes, members of Cage The Elephant, Lennon Stella, Barney Cortez, Morning Teleportation??s Travis Goodwin and legendary Motown-drummer Miss Bobbye Hall, among many others. The album also contains ??audio samples?? from when Rayland and his older sister Brooke were little kids. ??If I Were A Butterfly? was in large part recorded while Baxter was living alone at Thunder Sound (and outside in the wild nature surrounding it, with chirping birds, bullfrogs and crawfish), an abandoned rubber-band factory turned studio in Kentucky with later sessions taking place in California, Tennessee, Texas and Washington. The Nashville, Tennessee eccentric and ever-evolving journeyman??s most recent release was ??Good Mmornin? (2019), a tribute-EP to the late Mac Miller. Prior to that he released three full-length studio albums: ??Wide Awake?, ??Imaginery Man? and ??Feathers & Fish-hooks?. Baxter co-produced ??If I Were A Butterfly? alongside Tim O??Sulivan (Grace Potter, The Head & The Heart) and Kai Welch (Molly Tuttle, Sierra Hull), slowly piecing together the album??s patchwork of lush psychedelia and Beatlesque indie pop. On his new album his wit, storytelling and songcraft is front and center; it??s Baxter??s most fully evolved and wisest body of work to date, but it also bears the sonic freedom of someone who's got nothing left to lose. -
Limited translucent orange colored vinyl LP pressing. 2022 release. Rayland Baxter holed up for over a year at a former rubber-band factory in the Kentucky countryside living in a barn with the squirrels and birds. "I just waited for the record to build itself. I'd get up and go outside, see a butterfly and connect that with some impulsive thought I'd had three months ago and suddenly a song I'd been working on would make sense." Baxter co-produced the album, slowly piecing together it's patchwork of lush psychedelia and Beatlesesque pop
