The title of Tom Skinnerâ??s first release under his own name is a reference to cellist Abdul Wadudâ??s ultra-rare 1978 solo album â??By Myselfâ??, which Skinner listened to repeatedly during lockdown. Wadudâ??s album was privately pressed on his own label, Bisharra, and whilst Skinnerâ??s title uses the more conventional spelling of this common Arabic name, they both have the same intention or meaning: it translates as â??good newsâ??, or â??the bringer of good newsâ??.
This is a classic-sounding record that connects backwards to Skinnerâ??s 2017 Hello Skinny collaboration with American composer and Arthur Russell collaborator Peter Zummo on â??Watermelon Sunâ??. It links sideways to Makaya McCravenâ??s beat maker-inspired treatments of jazz sessions, and it offers a musical bridge to Sons of Kemetâ??s most meditative moments. - "Voice Of Bishara" is the debut solo album by acclaimed British drummer and composer Tom Skinner, released on CD by Brownswood Recordings. This innovative record blends jazz with elements of avant-garde, hip-hop, and contemporary classical music, showcasing Skinner's dynamic approach to rhythm and composition.
