â??The Electric Spanking Of War Babiesâ?? war die zwölfte Studio-LP der Band und enthielt mehrere Musiker, die neu in der Funkadelic-Besetzung waren, insbesondere Sly Stone. Mit seinen Anspielungen auf den Vietnamkrieg und den US-Imperialismus war George Clintons Projekt von Anfang an für juristische Kontroversen vorbestimmt, nicht zuletzt wegen seiner kompromisslosen Cover-Art, die das Originallabel Warner Bros zensierte.
Von Robert Christgau als â??das solideste, seltsamste Stück P-Funk, seit sich eine Nation unter einem Groove versammelt hatâ?? beschrieben und ursprünglich als Doppel-LP konzipiert, wurden viele Tracks auf Clintons späteren P-Funk-Projekten veröffentlicht.
