 | | Description: | The British conductor Sir John Eliot Gardiner celebrates his 80th birthday on April 20, 2023. Just over two weeks later, on May 6th, he will conduct the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists at Westminster Abbey in London in a prelude to the coronation of King Charles III.
John Eliot Gardiner: The Complete Erato Recordings is a 64-CD set that unites all the recordings he made over a period of nearly 20 years for Erato, EMI and Virgin. While he originally established his reputation in music from the pre-Classical era, Gardiner has said: â??My love for baroque music has never been exclusive â?¦ Of course I am attracted by period instruments, but that has never been an end in itself. For me, it is simply a matter of always moving further towards the truth, towards a fresh interpretation.â?
Conducting ensembles he founded â?? the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestra and the English Baroque Soloists â?? and the Orchestre de lâ??Opéra de Lyon, Gardiner proves as idiomatic and revelatory in Bach, Handel, Purcell, Rameau and Campra as in Gluck, Berlioz, Offenbach, Chabrier and Massenet. To quote the Financial Times: â??What Gardiner demonstrated â?¦ is that stylistic fidelity is a movable feast, and he has not lost his hunger for it.â?
