Extra-Infos: .. Bill Dixon Quartet / Incl. 12p Booklet
Description:For approximately 18 months (from the fall of 1961 to June 1963), Archie Shepp and Bill Dixon co-led a group that varied in size between a quartet, quintet and sextet, depending on the gig. They mostly played coffee houses and small theaters in Greenwich Village, and traveled to Scandinavia in July 1962 for a series of concerts at the socialist-leaning First International Youth Festival in Helsinki. Back in the United States, they were featured in a regular series of radio performances on New Yorkâ??s WBAI. However, unless any unknown radio broadcast or live European performance surfaces, their only recorded works together consist of the studio quartet album made for Savoy in October 1962, presented on this CD EDITION. Archie Sheppâ??s only other recording session for the Savoy label, including Don Cherry on one track, and Bill Dixonâ??s second recording session, in a septet format, have been added as a bonus. - .. BILL DIXON QUARTET / INCL. 12P BOOKLET
Limited Edition CD- release with 12-page booklet. 1-4: New York, October 1962. Bonus Tracks: 5-7: New York, February 5, 1964. 8-14: New York, February 4, 1964. Tracks 1 to 4 originally released as [r=1936700]. Tracks 5 to 14 originally released as [r=2464127]. © &? 2023 Fingerpoppin' Records Photos: X. Made in the EU. This reissue is nearly identical to both [r=2491096] (2009) and [r=11219515] (2013). The CD content is identical; the booklet has been redesigned, but the written and photographic content is identical apart from the updated date (2022) on Albert Michael's essay, and the addition of the image reproduced on the booklet's rear side. As compared to both the original [r=2464127] and the BYG reissues of the '70s, these reissues follow the 2001 Atlantic CD [r=2125608] in reversing the song titles of 'The 12th December' (3:13) and the six-section suite 'Winter Song 1964' (14:41). One must assume this was a mistake at Savoy only corrected for the 2001 release, given the track times and subtitles.
