Description:The creative guitarist Grant Green(1931-79) joined forces with the underrated tenor saxophonist Ike Quebec(1918-63) for this excellent album recorded in New Jersey on December 11, 1961 & March 1, 1962. With Green & Quebec were a superb rhythm section of Sonny Clark(piano); Sam Jones(bass) & Louis Hayes(drums) playing nine memorable tracks(including one alternative take of the title tune). Quebec was in fine form despite nearing the end of his life and has a good rapport with Green. Highlights include impressive interpretations of 'Someday My Prince Will Come', 'Back In Your Own Back Yard', 'My One And Only Love' & Charlie Parker's 'Cool Blues'. 'Born To Be Blue' is one of the finest BLUE NOTE recordings of Grant Green & Ike Quebec which deserves a place in any serious modern jazz collection. - 180GR.
This was one of the best of the very few collaborative sessions recorded by the legendary jazz guitarist Grant Green with tenor saxophonist Ike Quebec. Blue Note executive Alfred Lion was always fond of Quebec's music, but was unsure how audiences would respond to the saxophonist after a decade of low visibility. Quebec's comeback, however, was cut short by his death from lung cancer on January 16, 1963. The wonderful band featured here is completed by pianist Sonny Clark (who also died prematurely in 1963), bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Louis Hayes. 180-gram VIRGIN VINYL LIMITED EDITION. The Complete Album + 2 Bonus TrackS.
