In the stampede to set up new independent record companies after the Second World War to exploit the emerging black music market, soon to be rechristened Rhythm & Blues, it's interesting that female blues singers suffered badly. While Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf or John Lee hooker, say, could all enjoy a boom in popularity and record sales there were no such rewards for most of the women.
