Iñárritu geschrieben und gedreht wurde. Der Film zeigt Daniel GimĂ©nez Cacho an der Seite von Griselda Siciliani und handelt von einem Journalisten/Dokumentarfilmer, der in sein Heimatland Mexiko zurĂĽckkehrt und dort eine existenzielle Krise in Form von Traumvisionen erlebt.
Bardo wurde bei den 79. Internationalen Filmfestspielen von Venedig im Wettbewerb um den Goldenen Löwen uraufgeführt. Die Kritiker lobten die Darsteller, die Kameraführung und die Regie. Bei der 95. Verleihung der Academy Awards erhielt er eine Nominierung für die beste Kameraführung. Bryce Dessner von The National schrieb die Filmmusik und schrieb: "Wir nahmen die Musik in Mexiko in den wunderschönen Sony Music Studios in Mexiko-Stadt und im Topetitud Studio in Coyocan auf. Der Prozess der Aufnahme der Musik für Bardo und die Zusammenarbeit mit erstaunlichen mexikanischen Musikern, darunter Brass Bands aus Oaxaca und Musiker der National Symphony, im Studio war eine unglaubliche Freude für mich und etwas, an das ich mich für den Rest meines Lebens erinnern werde." Der Soundtrack von Bardo enthält auch Songs von David Bowie, Genesis, José José u.a.

Bardo premiered at the 79th Venice International Film Festival in competition for the Golden Lion. Critics praised the performances, cinematography, and direction. It received a nomination for Best Cinematography at the 95th Academy Awards. Bryce Dessner, of The National, made the score and wrote; 'We recorded the score in Mexico at the beautiful Sony Music Studios in Mexico City and Topetitud Studio in Coyocan. The process of recording the music for Bardo and working with amazing Mexican musicians, including Brass bands from Oaxaca and musicians from the National Symphony, in the studio was an incredible joy for me and something I will remember for the rest of my life. 'The soundtrack of Bardo also contains songs by David Bowie, Genesis, Jose Jose.
