To celebrate the albumâ??s 25-year anniversary, The Jesus And Mary Chain are reissuing their long-sold-out sixth studio album â??Munkiâ??. Out October 20th 2023 on Fuzz Club, the reissue arrives on CD and gatefold double LP. The vinyl has been remastered by Pete Maher (The Rolling Stones, Jack White, Liam Gallagher). Originally released June 2nd 1998 on Sub Pop / Creation Records, â??Munkiâ?? was â?? up until the Mary Chainâ??s reformation in 2007 â?? an experimental rockâ??nâ??roll masterclass turned swan song for the Reid brothers, whose fractious in-fighting culminated in the bandâ??s break-up less than a year after its release. It was perhaps fitting, then, that â??Munkiâ?? is argued by some as the definitive Mary Chain record in the way it seemed to chart the full array of musical directions the band had ploughed over the five records that came before. The decision to bookend the album with Jimâ??s rousing sing-along â??I Love Rock 'N' Rollâ?? and Williamâ??s caustic white-noise anthem â??I Hate Rock 'N' Rollâ?? perfectly captures the two-fold tension at the heart of the Mary Chain at that time â?? a tension between noise and melody, and warring brothers. Across the albumâ??s 17 tracks and 70-minute running time, there are the expected abrasive noise-rock epics â??Cracking Upâ?? and â??Degenerateâ?? by way of fuzzed-out pop hits like â??Fizzyâ?? and the tender acoustic slow-burner â??Never Understoodâ??. Between the Reidâ??s Glaswegian snarls and unapologetically insolent lyrics â?? "I'm a mean motherfcker now, but I once was coolâ?, â??McDonaldâ??s is sht!â?, â??Children are fools!â? being just a few lyrical highlights â?? â??Munkiâ?? also features two great guest appearances. Mazzy Starâ??s Hope Sandoval returns for another Mary Chain duet on â??Perfumeâ??, which has a swagger thatâ??s equal parts menacing and bittersweet, and the Reidâ??s younger sister Linda (Sister Vanilla) sings beautifully on top of â??Moe Tuckerâ??s motorik proto-punk scuzz. -

Reissue. Munki is the sixth studio album by Scottish rock band The Jesus and Mary Chain, originally released in 1998. After leaving Blanco y Negro, the Reid brothers signed to Sub Pop in the U.S. and Creation, who had released their debut single "Upside Down" in 1984, in the UK.
