Eugene "Gene" McDaniels wurde erstmals in den frÃ¼hen 60er Jahren mit Pop-Soul-Hits wie â??A Hundred Pounds of Clayâ? bekannt. Aber zu der Zeit, als McDaniels sein 1970er Album Outlaw aufnahm, war er bereits ein verÃ¤nderter Mann. Erste Anzeichen seiner Verwandlung waren 1966 sichtbar, als er den Vietnam-Protestsong â??Compared to Whatâ? schrieb, den Les McCann und Eddie Harris zu einem Standard auf ihrem Album â??Swiss Movementâ?? (1969) gemacht hat. Aber â??Outlawâ?? ging noch einige Schritte weiter. Auf der Vorderseite war ein Bild von McDaniels zu sehen, der eine Bibel hielt, seine Frau Ramona hÃ¤lt einen MunitionsgÃ¼rteln und Freundin Susan Jane ist mit einem menschlichen SchÃ¤del im Vordergrund zu sehen. Der Inhalt des Albums war ebenso radikal. â??Silent Majorityâ? fÃ¼hrte schlieÃ?lich zum Ende der Zusammenarbeit von Atlantic und McDaniels. Die Musik auf "Outlaw" Musik ist ein schwerer Mix aus Soul, Jazz, Folk und Rock Grooves. Zum Line-up gehÃ¶rten Ron Carter, Eric Weissberg und Hugh McCracken. Produziert hat der legendÃ¤re Joel Dorn, Kultfigur William S. Fischer agierte als musikalischer Director. Das Resultat war ein oft von Hip Hop KÃ¼nstlern gesampeltes Album, das bis heute relevant ist. The musicians (who include giants Ron Carter, Hugh McCracken, and Ray Lucas) bring an unflashy virtuosity to their performances. At a time when African American consciousness was exploding in new and provocative directions in popular music, Outlaw shows Eugene McDaniels was at the vanguard of this revolution.
