Description:??One of the most celebrated commercial recordings ever made, this matchlessly authentic performance should be in every collection.? ?? Gramophone On 10th January 1963 sessions were completed at London??s Kingsway Hall for this world premiere recording of Britten??s War Requiem. Sixty years later, Decca have made new high definition 24-bit/192 kHz transfers of the original quarter-inch stereo mastertapes at British Grove Studios. Conducted by the composer and featuring the three soloists for whom it was written, this still remains, for many, the definitive recording. The vinyl is cut to lacquer at half-speed at Abbey Road Studios, and this is the first LP release of the secret recording of Britten??s rehearsals for the War Requiem since the sole pressing gifted by Decca to Britten on his 50th birthday in November 1963. The truly expansive booklet includes excerpts from John Culshaw??s autobiography Putting the Record Straight; reminiscences from three of the original 1963 Decca recording crew; technical notes; detailed essays on the War Requiem and the recording sessions; and rare and new photographs. The "Britten: War Requiem" LP, performed by the legendary Galina Vishnevskaya, Peter Pears, and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau with the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under Benjamin Britten's direction, is a landmark recording in classical music history. Released by Decca, this album captures one of the most profound choral-orchestral works of the 20th century?a moving meditation on war and peace that blends Latin liturgical texts with poetry by Wilfred Owen. The performers are among the greatest vocalists of their era: Vishnevskaya was renowned for her powerful soprano voice; Pears was Britten?s muse and an acclaimed tenor; Fischer-Dieskau remains one of history?s finest baritones. Their collaboration here is both historic and deeply emotional. Decca Records has long been celebrated for its high-fidelity recordings and commitment to artistic excellence in classical music since its founding in 1929. This LP stands as a testament to both Britten's genius and Decca's legacy.
