"Slow drag"(1967 and released on the blue note label) was one of trumpeter Donald Byrd's final hard bop dates. The music finds Byrd looking both backwards toword the blues and forword toward modal jazz and even hints to the avant-garde. The quintet outing features originals by Byrd, Walton and Red along with the standards "Secret love" and "My ideal". This session is a fine effort.
