Description: | â??The works on this album are imbued with a sense of rebellion,â? says Piotr Anderszewski. â??There is no place here for stylisation or decorum. They plumb the very roots of music.â?
A native of Warsaw, Anderszewski juxtaposes pieces for solo piano by three Central European composers of the earlier 20th century, each asserting his countryâ??s musical identity: JanáÄek in Moravia (absorbed into Czechoslovakia in 1918), Szymanowski in Poland, and Bartók in Hungary. Folk music is a determining influence in the programme â?? the second book of JanáÄekâ??s On an overgrown path (named after a traditional wedding song), six of Szymanowskiâ??s 20 mazurkas, and Bartókâ??s 14 Bagatelles. Szymanowskiâ??s eclecticism colours his mazurkas, composed during Polandâ??s halcyon inter-war period of autonomy. Often chromatically adventurous, they fuse the traditional mazurka and the spirit of Chopin with musical elements from Polandâ??s southern highlands. Piotr Anderszewski speaks of â??primitive incantations, simultaneously ecstatic and severe in their beautyâ?.
