Description: | You've just arrived in the bustling city, finding yourself at a party where unfamiliar faces surround you. A stranger approaches and inquires, "Hey, are you alone here?" This encapsulates the sentiment that Porcelain id conveys on their debut album Bibi:1, a name derived from the Arabic pet name Habibi. Hubert Tuyishime (they/them/their) operates under the pseudonym Porcelain id, crafting distinctive songs since 2020.
The album, influenced by their transition from a serene provincial town to Antwerp, serves as a sonic journey into city traffic amid rush hour chaos, trusting to emerge unscathed. It celebrates encounters with strangers and the comforting embrace of friends upon returning home. The narrative unfolds as a tale of being a stranger in a city romanticized from afar, exploring the subsequent rejection and the misleading nostalgia that colors reflections later on.
While Bibi:1, entirely in English, might initially seem like a departure from the autobiographical intimacy and lo-fi singer-songwriter style of previous EPs like Mango and Reprise, and tracks like Vlaanderen, Porcelain id sees it as a natural evolution. This evolution leans towards greater abstraction, experimentation, and electronic elements while maintaining a connection to the core essence of Porcelain id.
The transformed sound results from a collaborative effort with producer and creative partner Youniss Ahamad. Despite their diverse musical backgrounds, the collaboration was sparked by Porcelain id's ambitious vision: 'I want to make something that is situated between Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Yeezus by Kanye West.'
The outcome reflects the perfect synergy of Porcelain id and Youniss â?? lo-fi yet ambitious, fragile yet rough, poppy yet disruptive, at times challenging, then welcoming, and occasionally even danceable. Each song serves as a small vignette contributing to a diverse yet cohesive whole. Songs like Adam Coming Home and Low Poly maintain the melancholy essence of Porcelain id's earlier work, while Lights! ventures into new territory. The debut single Man Down draws inspiration from Antwerp students, embodying a nocturnal stroll through the city.
Brilliant features David Idrisov playing bass in a unique style, simulating Chet Baker's bass playing if he weren't a trumpeter. Cellophane flirts with emo trap and was sung with raspberries between the teeth, creating a distinctive effect reminiscent of grills. - |
