Description: | 200 years ago, on May 7th 1824 at the Theater am Kärntnertor in Vienna, Beethovenâ??s mighty 9th Symphony was performed for the first time. Vienna â?? specifically its famous â??goldenâ?? concert hall, the Musikverein â?? was also the location for this recording. Made in 2002, it is now released on two LPs to mark the bicentenary of Beethovenâ??s epoch-making masterwork. Sir Simon Rattle conducts the Wiener Philharmoniker with vocal soloists Barbara Bonney, Birgit Remmert, Kurt Streit and Thomas Hampson, and, visiting from a city that played a crucial role in Rattleâ??s career, the City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus. The grandeur of the symphony and the celebratory nature of the release are expressed in the colour of the vinyl for this limited-edition LP set â?? a rich red-gold.
