Description: | George Lloyd: Symphonies Nos. 7-12 by Bbc Philharmonic, released 5 April 2024.
This version of George Lloyd: Symphonies Nos. 7-12 comes as a 4xCD. - Lloyd became a symphonist despite himself. When he was in his twenties he seemed destined to be a composer of operas and it is likely that, had the vicissitudes of war not intervened, he would have written music for the stage exclusively. In an article for the June 1939 issue of the Musical Monthly Record, Harry Farjeon wondered why music for Lloyd was 'not centred in the concert hall but in the theatre' and quoted the young composer as being 'interested only in opera'. There are strong traces in the symphonies of what might have been: the intensely lyrical, cantabile nature of the writing, the intermezzo-like movements, the opera buffa qualities of the finales and the feeling for the long line which runs through those supple and sweeping melodies all denote a born opera composer. In the event his operatic aspirations were cruelly cut short and it is to his courageous, life-affirming twelve symphonies that we must look to chart his development, recovery and eventual triumph.See images for recording datesThe CD "Symphonies Nos. 7 - 12" by George Lloyd, performed by the BBC Philharmonic and released by Lyrita, presents a remarkable collection of orchestral works from one of Britain's most distinctive symphonic voices. Spanning Lloyd's later creative period, these symphonies are celebrated for their lush orchestrations, melodic richness, and emotional depth?qualities that have earned Lloyd renewed recognition in recent decades. The BBC Philharmonic delivers powerful interpretations under expert direction, capturing both the grandeur and intimacy of Lloyd?s music. Lyrita is renowned for its dedication to British classical repertoire; since its founding in 1959, it has been instrumental in bringing lesser-known masterpieces to wider audiences with exceptional sound quality and scholarly attention to detail. George Lloyd (1913?1998) was an English composer whose career overcame significant adversity?including wartime injury?to produce sixteen symphonies marked by lyricism and optimism. His resurgence late in life saw his music championed internationally, securing his place among leading twentieth-century British composers. |
