Februar 1961, war Bill Evans' vierte LP als Leader und das zweite Studioalbum des legendären Trios des Pianisten mit Scott LaFaro und Paul Motian. Ihre erste gemeinsame Aufnahme war das Studioalbum Portrait in Jazz, das 1959 aufgenommen wurde. Das Evans-LaFaro-Motian Trio erreichte seinen Höhepunkt mit den Clubaufnahmen vom 25. Juni 1961 im Village Vanguard in New York. LaFaro starb nur zehn Tage später, im Alter von 25 Jahren, bei einem Autounfall. Explorations (Riverside RLP-351), recorded on February 2, 1961, was Bill Evans' fourth LP as a leader and the second studio album by the pianist's legendary trio with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian. Their first recording together had been the studio album Portrait in Jazz, taped in 1959. The Evans-LaFaro-Motian Trio would reach a climax with their June 25, 1961 club recordings at the Village Vanguard in New York. LaFaro would die in a car accident just ten days later, at the age of 25.
