That New York Times verdict on the American composer John Cage (1912-1992) finds further resonance in Bertrand Chamayouâ??s album CAGE2. Continuing his recorded exploration of Cageâ??s music â?? which began with the pairing of Cage and Satie on his Erato album Letters to Erik Satie â?? the French pianist performs 20 dance-inspired pieces for prepared piano. Cage invented the prepared piano in 1940, when he was writing a score for the dancer-choreographer Syvilla Fort. To produce to a variety of timbres and percussive effects, he ingeniously inserted small objects â?? such as bolts, screws, coins, and pieces of rubber or fabric â?? between the strings of a grand piano. Dance was an important theme in the composerâ??s life and career, and the title CAGE2 is taken from a stage show that Bertrand Chamayou and dancer-choreographer Ã?lodie Sicard toured around France.
