 | Description: | The Nikolov-Ivanovic Undectet is a large ensemble with an eclectic instrumentation. This eleven-piece band led by pianist and arranger Vladimir Nikolov and drummer Srdjan Ivanovic fuses tradition and out-of-the-box thinking to produce sophisticated Balkan influenced music that challenges the listener on an emotional and intellectual level. â??Dystopiaâ?? is their third but it is also the first album in a new blasting line-up including top musicians from France, Serbia, Macedonia and Bulgaria. This album reveals 10 new compositions, written in the pandemic and post-pandemic period. The core of the material emerged during the lockdown days as two protest pieces, â??Dystopia â?? and â??Screamâ?. They emphasize our need for basic freedoms and our difficulty to cope with extreme situations. The arrangements include modern spatial writing, wide atmospheres and tricky rhythms and a blend of the Balkan and African traditions. Vladimir Nikolov was born 1979 and raised in Skopje, Macedonia. He started music at the age of 14, beginning with the guitar. Soon after, he enrolled in classical guitar studies, graduating with an original composition. Deeply inspired by the mentorship of composer and arranger Ilija Pejovski, Vladimir began cross-over composing and arranging. He started jazz composition and arranging studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, Netherlands where he finished his Bachelor and Masters studies in only 3 years, in 2005. As an arranger, Vladimir worked with ensembles such as the Metropole Orchestra, Konzerthaus orchester Berlin, Brussels Philharmonic, Heritage Orchestra, BBC Radio Orchestra. Among the collaborative artists, he worked with: John Clayton, Randy Brecker, Vince Mendoza, Chaka Khan, Jules Buckley, Jacob Collier, to name but a few. - - He also orchestrated the Grammy awarded arrangement of the retake of â??All Night Longâ?? by Jacob Collier (2020). He won numerous prizes for his compositions and arrangements for Big Band, as well as his works for Symphony Orchestra. He now lives in Belgrade, Serbia. It was in Amsterdam that he met drummer Srdjan Ivanovic where, during their studies, they forged a strong musical connection, growing alongside from similar roots. Srdjan was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia from which he moved in 1992 to Athens, Greece, to escape the war. His earliest musical influences involved late night music sessions of his fatherâ??s friends, a classical guitarist and composer (incidentally who's work Vladimir had played as a guitarist). During his studies at the Amsterdam and Utrecht Conservatory, he won several awards, most notably the Dutch Jazz Competition during the North Sea Jazz Festival. He was also given the prestigious Prins Bernhard Foundation scholarship to study in New York City. Srdjan lives in Paris and is a leader of his own band, who's album Modular was released in February 2024 as well as leader of Blazin' Quartet and co-leader of a rock-world band, Xenos. « The story of Dystopia tries to cover both sides of the coin. Some of us watch the terrible news from the comfort of our home, while some others fight for their life and experience true horror. The way we perceive human pain and dystopia is different for everybody. The music portrays that through different styles, characters and atmospheres. This projectâ??s aim is not to show how bad or good something is, but to raise questions. » Vladimir Nikolov.
